The ARC Research Hub for Connected Sensors for Health and IHealthE came together on October 20th for an event that embodied our joint mission of advancing health technologies for better outcomes and societal impact. The afternoon was filled with engaging discussions and insights where 70 enthusiastic participants gathered to explore key translational topics and delve into an enlightening panel discussion on intellectual property.

The event kicked off with a session titled "Translation: the balancing act," featuring UNSW Pro Vice-Chancellor (Industry & Innovation), Professor Stephen Rodda, and Scientia Professor Justin Gooding. They delved into the trade-offs involved in translating research into commercially viable products, with Prof Gooding addressing the conflict between publishing research papers and filing patents, while Prof Rodda focused on the choice between spinning out or licensing technology to industry partners.

The following panel session, moderated by Dr Ian Goon, included Prof Madhu Bhaskaran from RMIT University, Dr John Parker, Tyree IHealthE, Maria Lund from IP Group, and Dr Duncan MacInnis from MTPConnect. They engaged in a discussion on the significance of intellectual property in establishing competitive advantages for companies, the obstacles faced in commercialising IP, and best practices for ensuring fair collaboration in multi-party research. Key takeaways from the panel discussion encompassed strategies for universities to enhance their support in this context.

Following this, the event continued with the Project Showcase where the progress of The Hub research projects were showcased, and participants received an overview of IHealthE's translation support. The day concluded with networking and a poster presentation session, providing participants with ample opportunities to connect and discuss the exciting possibilities for the future of health technologies. It was a great afternoon to hear about all of the incredible projects being undertaken in the ecosystem and connect with others in the community.
