The Tyree Foundation Institute of Health Engineering (Tyree IHealthE) at the University of New South Wales, Sydney (UNSW), was created to address unmet needs in health innovation translation. By investing in innovative and cross-functional ways of working, Tyree IHealthE leverages a range of skills and disciplines to ensure that clinicians, and patient needs, remain at the core of health technology solutions.
The Tyree IHealthE PhD Top-Up Scholarship offers enhanced opportunities for outstanding graduates undertaking a PhD aligned with the Tyree IHealthE mission. Engaging with us to complete your PhD gives your research the kick-start to translation. We offer you access to leading engineers, clinicians, end-users and mentors, facilitating your research through our innovative translation framework to develop real-world solutions.
The scholarship is $15,000 per annum for up to 3 years based on successfully completing yearly reviews. Scholarship recipients will also be able to access up to $5,000 over the life of the scholarship for professional development activities.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for a Tyree IHealthE PhD Top-Up Scholarship you must have:
- first or upper second-class honours or equivalent in a relevant research area;
- admission to UNSW as a PhD student in engineering, medicine, industrial design, business or a related discipline;
- hold an appropriate visa to study in Australia (if international);
- be no further than two years (FTE) into a UNSW PhD candidature;
- hold a primary scholarship; for example, a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or other primary scholarship of similar value;
- not be in receipt of any other Top-Up scholarship;
- a university supervisor who is currently, or willing to become, a member of Tyree IHealthE.
Assessment
Applications will be assessed on:
1. Quality and relevance of student project to the aims of Tyree IHealthE. The research must be aligned with the identification of unmet clinical need and the development of innovative, multidisciplinary solutions.
2. Academic level of the student. As per the eligibility criteria above.
3. Availability of university supervision. The relevance of the supervisor to the aims of Tyree IHealthE will be assessed, with preference given to academic members of the institute as supervisors.

1. A resume with the names and contact details of two academic referees;
2. A cover letter, one page maximum, that addresses the following points:
- the reasons why the research project/s you have selected are of interest to you and how your skills/knowledge meet the project requirements;
- the relevance of the project to the aims of Tyree IHealthE (please see above and here for more information on the aims);
- an outline of your longer-term career aspirations and how this program will help you achieve them.
